After walking off a tram headed toward the airport security line, it was astonishing to see a typically crowded vendor had no one waiting in line. Might as well stop. But I was so disappointed with the vendor at the airport after walking away. They forgot to smash my blueberry muffin! There was no time to return. But fortunately for me, airport security saved the day. Not only were they able to take nearly ten minutes going through my bookbag but they found a superior method for the flattening process of a muffin. I had no idea it was so easy, but that is probably because of the lack of past effort in trying to accomplish this feat.

It turns out that repeatedly moving items out of and back into multiple times, with little care or concern, is a fool proof way to disorganize everything. Not only that but it seems that instead of putting food that once looked desirable, safely on the top, it can be stuffed all the way back to the bottom on the bookbag. Let me pause for a couple minutes to eat this dilapidated, poor excuse of a muffin the baker gave up on.

Continuing to write after a brief delay. Wow, saying grace certainly felt awkward this time. But not to worry, it was with cheer that the muffin was eaten. Gratitude requires more effort in less than perfect circumstances. Travel tip: do not bring a tiny, spiral bound notepad because they are easily confused with a 22-caliber gun cartridge. No wonder security seemed a little on edge with me! The two guys were just trying to do their job to keep everyone safe. I do not fault them at all, although it’s hard to keep a lid on sarcasm. We should be grateful to have people that actually care about our safety.

Close to boarding time, the lines formed. After waiting about ten minutes, the loudspeaker came on to notify us that the plane was ready, the captain was ready, and the crew was almost ready. All except one missing flight attendant. Federal guidelines require a certain number of flight attendants, and they cannot even start to board until all of them are accounted for. Twenty minutes later, the ten-minute delay that was announced was over. What are you doing sarcasm? Get back in that container! However, a simple delay sparked a conversation that lasted throughout the delay.

It was interesting to meet a mid-seventies, widowed, cancer survivor on her way to explore an active volcano. It’s not every day that we have the opportunity to meet someone who had to fight for their life. It seemed that fear was not about to stop that young at heart woman from living life. We talked about our families and shared a few laughs.

Life is not always sunshine and rainbows. We are given reasons to be upset, angry, and bitter but why should we dwell on such things? Why not instead, look to the bright side of things. There is no way to escape inconvenience every time, no matter how hard we try. We can choose to remain happy after a delay.

I learned that if I fly, not to pack tiny notepads in my bookbag and wait to get food after security. It was also learned that flight attendants do more than hand out strange snacks and drinks. They are trained for emergency situations, the ones they tell us about every single time we fly no matter how many times we have all flown. The airlines are not stupid, they know people aren’t listening. Nevertheless, they remain relentless, unwilling to give up on the ignorant many, me included!

When dealt with a deadly disease, there are people who overcome it. Anytime we encounter living proof, it is an inspiration to us all. No matter how hard life gets, they remind us not to quit. Never know who might be inspired fifteen years later at an airport gate, waiting for an unscheduled flight attendant to step up to the plate and save our flight departure from further delay. That was great news after all, because out of all the connecting flights, mine was the shortest! Don’t let the next plane leave without me!
