Where does the time go? I used to think there was a large, black hole that sucked up all my time. For one reason or another, it just kept disappearing.

“I don’t have time,” is one of the biggest lies we repeat to ourselves. We claim to be so busy, but still find time for things that are important to us. Things like taking a shower, wearing deodorant, or brushing teeth always find a way into the daily routine. Why is that? Likely because when we were wee little rascals, someone barked at us to do those things. Back then, it became a habit that we got used to. As adults, we still do them because if we don’t, there will be some unfriendly reminders. If people gasp for breath when they are near you, it could be a sign that you missed one of these important activities today.

We lie to ourselves about what we say is important to us. Call this upcoming activity a little test of truth. When you stop to think about it, if something is important enough to you, you really do make time for it. Knowing your priorities is vital to time management. If you have never tried it, document the use of your time. Record the amount of time you spend doing certain activities and you might be shocked. Sure, many things need to be done whether you like doing them or not. However, when you see how your time is allocated, it will tell you what is important in your life.

In the rush of this time of year, things are more hectic than in many other parts of the year. With so many tasks to do, it is easy to run out of time, so every minute counts. If this is true for you, then don’t waste your time! If you’ve identified some activities that are draining your energy and time, brainstorm some alternative things that could be done. For example, hire someone to do some work for you. Delegation can be a tricky thing to do. After all, those other chaps cannot do it as good as we can, right? Risk falling from a high horse and try testing out this theory because you might be surprised. Someone might come along and free up your time, which allows you to blissfully frolic off into the sunset performing other activities.

As for wasting time, this is not an excuse to get impatient with others. We’ve all witnessed the cruel treatment of customer service workers by people who insisted their time was being wasted. In many cases, there is absolutely no reason to be rude to these workers. If you are standing in line somewhere waiting on customer service, use that time to make a grocery list. Or better yet, set tomorrow’s goals (as if that would ever happen)! Anyway, find some way to make productive use of that time rather than plotting the verbal demise of a fellow human being.

It’s up to you to make proper use of your time because no one is going to manage it for you. If you are honest with yourself, you may find feelings often use up your time. Don’t let your feelings and emotions rule your life. Own your life and plan it accordingly!
