If there ever was a waste in life, it would be that of a second. Seconds move so quickly that we seldom value them at all. If only we realized how they are the building blocks of life, then perhaps we would not waste so many of them. On their own, seconds are insignificant, although they do play an important, long-term role. While contemplating a decision and weighing all the options, there comes a second when we finally commit to a decision, which could change the rest of our lives from that point forward.

Seconds become significant when grouped together to accomplish a task. It is surprising what can be accomplished in five minutes. For some reason, committing to an activity that last ten minutes or longer feels like an eternity. However, committing five minutes to something seems fairly simple and easy to try out. It takes a willingness to start out with something small. When reducing it down to a ridiculous level, it all seems so minute.

In sports, a split second can be the difference between first and second place. Winning in life often comes down to what is done with the seconds in a given day. When was the last time we threw ourselves into something small? People try to change the world and quickly grow frustrated because such a task is too large for one person. But what if each person were to tackle something on a much smaller level, give discipline to it, and act consistently. The combined efforts would be astounding.

Instead, everyone wants to be the big name and accomplish the major task while what is small is overlooked. This is how it goes with time. At any given moment, a person that desires change in life could stop everything. In one second, they could break their own routine. In one second, they could engage in another activity. While it may be uncharted territory, once in motion, it is easier to continue.

Recognize the value in one second. This moment, today, could be a turning point in our life. The opportunity that is before us may be but once, and never pass this way again. We do not always remember the times but, we remember the moments. In seconds, we can take in the world around us and see the value it has for us and figure out the value we can give it. There will be times of dark moments due to our bad choices. While the consequences may linger, it should not stop us from taking ten seconds to acknowledge our mistakes and pick up where we are, right now, and move forward past those mistakes. If we have been given a second chance or more for that matter, do not waste it. It is easy to take advantage of time, yet most of us will not do it. Never “kill” time, for it is one thing we are never guaranteed more of.
